Anotace knihy

The potential toxic effects of building materials on health has gained new importance in the context of the coronavirus crisis, because a healthy building environment is crucial to strengthen the immune system. The coronavirus crisis will also lead to an increased number of people working remotely from their homes. Advances in the Toxicity of Construction and Building Materials is an essential guide on the potential toxic effects of building materials on human health and how to design buildings to minimize these effects. Toxicity aspects have long been a field of research outside the boundaries of the construction industry belonging more to the realm of health professionals. That’s why architects, civil engineers and other professionals involved in the construction industry have so little knowledge about this important research field, even though many buildings suffer from problems related to excessive moisture with mold formation, or present low humidity levels giving rise to respiratory diseases. Indoor pollutants may include volatile organic compounds (VOC), formaldehyde, semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC), radon, NOx, asbestos and nanoparticles that can cause numerous health-related problems such as: asthma; itchiness; burning eyes, skin irritations or rashes, nose and throat irritation; nausea; headaches; dizziness; fatigue; reproductive impairment; disruption of the endocrine system; cancer; impaired child development and birth defects; immune system suppression and even cancer. In this exemplary new book, the chapters are divided over four sections that correspond to the most important areas of research, namely toxicity of the indoor environment, fire toxicity, radioactive materials and toxicity from plastics, metals, asbestos, nanoparticles and construction wastes. Key chapters are included on the reduction of chemical emissions in houses with eco-labelled building materials; potential risks posed by nano-enabled construction products; toxicity of concrete containing hazardous wastes; immobilization of toxic waste in geopolymers and risk management of hazardous substances in the circular economy. The book will be an essential reference resource for academic and industrial researchers, materials scientists, civil engineers, architects, fire safety engineers, postgraduate students, contractors and other professionals working and interested in the field of the toxicity of building materials. Provides an essential guide to the potential toxic effects of building materials on human health Comprehensively examines materials responsible for formaldehyde and volatile organic compound emissions, as well as semi-volatile organic compounds Comprehensive coverage of fire toxicity and evaluation of the radioactivity of building materials Includes several cases studies throughout and addresses current international standards
