Anotace knihy

Following the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 2 February 1861 which set Monaco's current land borders in stone, the Principality was forced to abandon its agricultural activities. With limited access to land, successive Sovereigns would turn to other sources of economic revenue, first capitalising on the growing fashion for bathing in the sea, and associated activities such as casino games, opera, and ballet. For the Principality, space was becoming an essential requirement, one without which all development - principally tourism - was impossible. The loss of territory that saw Monaco's geography radically shrink would ultimately be fertile ground for a host of initiatives, many of them technically pioneering and avant-garde, driven by the Rock's political vision throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. It was the reign of Rainier III, the Builder Prince , that truly marked Monaco's expansion. The first significant spatial gains came onshore, with the decision to move the railway lines crossing the country underground. This freed up a considerable amount of land.Between 1960 and 1965, some 9 hectares were reclaimed from the sea and developed in the eastern districts of Monte-Carlo: le Portier, le Larvotto, and le Sporting. Yet it was the creation of the Fontvieille district (1966-1985) that represented Monaco's real territorial revolution, with no fewer than 33 hectares of new land created on the sea at the western tip of the country. All of these projects would change the face of the Principality forever, increasing the size of the national territory by one third, from 150 to 202 hectares.
