What qualities characterize political engagement today? Political thinkers suggest that a sort of ethos infuses political judgments and practices. But although they offer compelling accounts of this ethos that underlies political life, its nature remains unexamined. This book offers a clarified, albeit specific, understanding of what we mean by ethos in political life. It suggests that a political ethos is a way of living in the world whilst responding to its multifarious challenges. The book takes into account the diversity and fluidity that characterizes democracy in late modernity and argues that today's individuals are exposed to diverse challenges and calls for political activism. Their responses to them, then, are also infused by a transient form of practical reason: metis. A concept employed in the antiquity but buried by the rigorous philosophers of the 4th century B.C., metis has always been operative in political life, but proves particularly relevant to the formation of political judgments in conditions of uncertainty and fluidity that we face today.
