Biological wastewater treatment using aeration lagoons removes soluble and insoluble organic pollutants, nitrogen, phosphorus and insoluble inert material from domestic and industrial wastewater. The design of aerobic lagoons depends mainly on the BOD5 removal rate, the influent temperature, the level of turbulence in the lagoon, the oxygen transfer rate, the concentration of nitrogen, suspended solids and the presence of algae.
