Adorno’s philosophy is a critique of political and ideological domination, as well as a meditation on the duties of a mind that, when confronted by disasters, does not yield to defeatism, but strives to find reasons for hope. The notion of utopia according to Adorno is first and foremost this sense of releasing possibilities that, though naturally buried in History and suppressed by the logic of capitalism, must be restored. Doing so presumes that singularities — the individual in the collective, the detail in the whole, the element in the composition — should not be annexed and liquidated, but to the contrary, preserved in their own form of expression. Adorno, along with Benjamin, gave the name of “constellations” to the ways by which these can be interlinked. To identify what is at stake, we must open our minds to a school of thought process that deconstructs the concepts of identity and totality, yet does not abandon hope. The Adornian concepts of dialectics and negativity are imbued with this fruitful tension. This introduction to Adorno’s work interprets it as a response to what Miguel Abensour called the “utopic summons”: beneath the opaqueness and darkness of the world, Adorno’s writing strives to awaken a “statement” of truth, rescue, and emancipation.Daniel Payot is Professor of the Philosophy of Art at Université de Strasbourg.
