Under the direction of Nicolas Beaupré, Heather Jones and Anne RasmussenThe aim of this work is to reformulate the question of the commitment of populations in the conflict by means of a new approach. It asserts that civilian and military populations alike were not just passive actors, but retained their capacity to react autonomously. It therefore offers a ternary terminology which can be used to delve into the experiences of peoples in wartime – acceptance, endurance and refusal. These three terms offer several advantages on a scale ranging from the individual to the collective. This work, based on original research initiated by the Péronne-based Centre international de recherche de l’Historial de la Grande Guerre, includes contributions by European and American historians who are among the world’s most respected World War I specialists.
