Four Forts of the DeccanThis book presents four significant fortifications of South India, each of which furnishes evidence of the excellence of the military technology developed in the Deccan between the 13th and 18th centuries. They have been selected for very specific reasons:_ Daulatabad, because the successive periods of building of this most amazing fortified town can be observed from the Yadavas to the Nizam Shahis, i.e. from the 13th to the 17th century;_ Mudugal, because, in this place contested for centuries by Hindu and Muslim rulers, we can fully document the manner in which the adil Shahis of Bijapur restored the old fort with innovative defence works between the middle of the 16th and the end of the 17th century;_ Gandikota, because there are anomalies that have to be explained about this wonderfully picturesque site, particularity in the layout of the walls and in the form of the flanks built by the Muslims in the seconde half of the 17th century;_ finally, Gutti, because this stronghold, reputed for its perennial water resources and renovated with works influenced by European designs in the second half of the 18th century, represents the last phrase in the history of Indian fortification before the British period.Ce livre présente quatre fortifications significatives de l’Inde du Sud qui témoignent de l’excellence des techniques militaires adoptées dans le Deccan entre le XIIIe et le XVIIe siècle. Chacune a été choisie pour des raisons particulières :_ Daulabad, parce que, autour de cette extraordinaire citadelle naturelle , on peut observer les différentes périodes de fortification, des Yadavas aux Nizam Shahis, du XIIIe au XVIIe siècle ;_ Mudugal, parce que, dans cette place forte dont hindous et musulmans se sont disputé la possession pendant des siècles, il est possible d’analyser pleinement la manière dont les Adil Shahis ont rénové les ouvrages de défense entre le milieu du XVIe et la fin du XVIIe siècle ;_ Gandikota, parce que, dans ce site étonnament pittoresque, on doit s’expliquer les anomalies que représentent le tracé des murs et la forme des flanquements des enceintes construites par les musulmans dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle ;_ enfin, Gutti, parce que cette forteresse, fameuse pour ses ressources pérennes en eau, rénovée dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle selon des modèles européens, représente la dernière phase de fortification indienne avant la période britannique.
