From the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century, theaesthetic implications of iron engineering were debated in Germanarchitectural theory. Historians have traditionally interpretedthis debate as evidence of the architectural profession's growingaffirmation of the modern ideals of industrial advance and rationalthought. This study argues that in the Janus-faced culture of earlymodern Germany, in which romantic Idealism and rational thoughtboth held sway, architects were not yet convinced that ironconstruction should be understood solely as a sign of modernprogress. During a period of heightened ambivalence towardmodernization, architects tested the capacity of iron engineeringto accommodate a range of cultural values. Drawing evidence fromthe theoretical writings of architects and critics, includingHermann Muthesius, Paul Schultze-Naumburg, and Peter Behrens, aswell as engineers, such as Franz Reuleaux, this study reveals therange of rhetorical strategies employed to test iron construction'scapacity for both Zivilisation and Kultur. The book provides a newperspective on modern building discourse for historians ofarchitecture, engineering, and culture.
