Anotace knihy

By virtue of the diversity of viewpoints and the practice of debate that it instituted and promoted, the Greek experience — the democratic one in particular — was an extraordinary incubator of ideas, precepts, and doctrines of all kinds. This led to a practice of examining and testing discourse, to what one might call a “critical ethos” in which we are still engaged, that has shaped who we are, and that we, in our own way, perpetuate. In this first volume of a trilogy devoted to the development of critical thinking in ancient Greece, Critique et licence dans la Grèce antique explores the different forms of expression of critique and freedom of thought in ancient Greece, from the Archaic era to the Hellenistic period. The main facets of ancient Greeks’ social, cultural, and intellectual lives are examined, whether with regard to religion and the various forms of its relation to worship and the sacred (section: Religion and critical approach of the religious); philosophy and its multiple inquiries into nature and its organizing principles, potential sources of knowledge and ways to skillfully reason and debate (section: Knowledge, paradoxes and skepticism); lifestyles to be practiced individually, as well as relationships to be cultivated within the city-state based on the natural or conventional character of social practices, institutions and laws (section: Social and political critique); or, lastly, literature and the theater and, more broadly, the freedom not just to create or speak one’s mind, but also to think and live as one wishes (section: Political license and artistic license).
