Anotace knihy

The approximately 18-chapters will be invited from outstanding international scholars from around the globe who have studied island ecosystems, and the social and ecological threats to their sustainability. In addition to assessing the key processes that shape and re-shape island ecosystems and their land cover/land use, the book highlights measurement and analysis methods to map landscape composition, spatial structure, and trajectories of change as well as spatial/statistical models to examine the social-ecological drivers of change on islands. Methods featured in the invited chapters include, for instance, satellite image time-series, geographic information systems, social surveys, econometric and spatial simulation models, and the fusion of multi-scale remote sensing with field campaigns. While the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador are substantially featured in the book, the goal is to examine other similarly challenged island and coastal settings from around the globe positioned along social, ecological, and geographic gradients that differentiate them on the basis of dominant forces and factors of change - land cover/land use change, climate and environmental change, settlement history, connectivity and accessibility, population, socio-economics, and the threats to island sustainability. Lastly, the book includes "theoretical" chapters that examine several lenses to examine island ecosystems and threats to their sustainability, and a synthesis chapter that highlights the key drivers of change on global islands, with an emphasis on the islands ecosystems more generally. Together, these chapters place in perspective how islands are studied and assessed globally, relying upon multi-scale data and an interdisciplinary theoretical lens that are integrative and generalizable to other geographic, social, and ecological settings. The general structure of the book is comprised of sections or parts that will showcase several invited chapters - (1) Theory & Context, (2) Human-Social Dimension, (3) Natural-Ecological Dimension, (4) Coupled Human-Natural Systems
