"My Summer in Margate: 1801" is a collection of eighteen letters the heroine Sofia Wright sends to her sister Anna the summer she spends in Margate, Kent. She wishes to learn more about watercolours by painting the seascapes of Thanet and she is so fortunate as to coincide with a young J.M.W. Turner. With every letter, we learn more about her progress with painting, her new acquaintances, as well as her uneasy relationship with Mr. Turner, which in the end turns into a confusing affection for the artist. But this is also the story of Carlota Sala, the writer of "My Summer in Margate: 1801," Catalan, unemployed and mother of two children, who struggles to get her novel published in a moment of global economic crisis. The originality within this book lies in the contrast of the regency-style novel in the first part, and the funny and fresh dialogues of the second part, with both heroines fighting to choose their own destinies in periods of distinct independence for women.
