This book explores the evolution of the structures and institutions that shape contemporary Russia. Beginning with an analysis of the reasons for Soviet dissolution, it argues that the Soviet system disintegrated due to a combination of structural and agency factors. It examines the re-emergence of Russia from a perspective that is neither Western nor Eurasian, but "Southern", specifically an Indian one that develops a critique of Western frameworks. The book further argues that the theoretical concept and practice of democratic centralism that was the keystone of the Soviet Communist Party system produced an overly centralised and rigid hierarchy within the party. Lastly, it traces the history of Russian institutions to reveal the underlying continuities with the Soviet past and the way the Russian regimes of the past two decades have reinvented and reshaped them. This book offers a valuable guide for general readers, students, journalists and policymakers alike.
