The Digital Lives of Black Women in Britain explores Black women's experiences of digital technology and the internet, content creation and cultural production, online interactions and meaning-making, diasporic identity and digital space, and collective and resistant efforts that incorporate social media. Based on interviews and archival research, this work considers how media is implicated in Black women's lives in Britain-ranging from accounts of twentieth century activism and television representations, to experiences of YouTube, Twitter and digital culture. Just as 'the personal is political', it is sometimes also 'digital'. Recognising tensions between the countercultural, communal and commercial qualities of digital sites, this book examines how the intersections of anti-Black racism, sexism and capitalism are connected to Black women's digital encounters, as well as linked material conditions, marketplace contexts and structural inequalities. Drawing on Black feminist approaches, this work synthesises critical understandings of digital culture, consumer culture, gender, race and Britain.
