Tulips and the Pale Horse is a story of love, lust, poverty, abuse, death, and triumph in nineteenth century Netherlands. When Janna Rop's young husband died leaving her destitute, her only choice was to live on a communal farm performing abhorrent tasks and sleeping on a straw bed in a drafty barn among lewd farmhands. Subsequently, she gave birth to four illegitimate children, including the author's direct ancestor, Jacob Rop, the first of his line to immigrate to America.
